Cleaning instructions for Ingenico Payment Terminals

Good hygiene and cleanliness are now more important than ever in companies – to protect both employees and customers. Your terminal serves as a frequent contact point between your customers and your employees. For your safety and the safety of your customers, we would therefore like to remind you how to clean your terminal.

Cleaning of your payment terminal:

Guidelines for the proper cleaning of Ingenico Payment Terminals are as follows:

For cleaning (all terminals) : Ingenico recommends using a soft cloth slightly impregnated with soapy water to clean the outside of the terminal

  • It is recommended to use a pre-impregnated cloth for a better control of the quantity of liquid applied on the terminal. An excessive application of liquid may generate functional problems.

For disinfection only the use of an Isopropylalcohol solution in water (between 70% and max. 85%) is allowed with following restrictions:

  • Only use it in small quantities on pre-impregnated cloths or wipes
  • For the following models, the complete terminal can be cleaned:
    • DESK/5000
    • MOVE/5000
    • All LANE/series
    • All SELF/series
    • All APOS and AXIUM series  touch screen models
  • For ALL OTHER MODELS following restrictions apply:
    • ONLY apply the alcohol solution on the housing parts and the keyboard of the terminal
    • DO NOT use the alcohol solution on, or directly around the display area

Do not:

  • Do not spray, coat or pour any liquid, disinfectant or cleaning liquid directly on the terminal or into any opening of the terminal.
  • Do not apply any alcohol (Ethanol, IPA…) cleaning solution on, or directly around the display area unless your terminal model is listed above
  • Do not touch or clean the electrical connections
  • Do not put anything into the smart card reader or magnetic card reader. Only use approved cleaning cards to clean the card readers
  • The list not being limited to the following chemical agents, do not use solvents, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, thinner, trichloroethylene, or ketone-based solvents, ether, thymol based agents, detergents or abrasive products as they may damage the plastic parts or electrical contacts of the terminal
  • Avoid excessive wiping, which might cause damage
  • Avoid exposing the terminal to direct sunlight
  • Avoid exposing the terminal to UV-C lamps as it could degrade the cosmetics of the terminal or create functional damage on the terminal

For detailed instructions on your specific terminal, please contact your local sales representative.
Please note:

  • While cleaning as per the instructions above has no impact on the performance or functionality of your terminal, a very frequent cleaning may modify the cosmetic aspect of some plastic parts used in our terminals. Such cosmetic wear is not covered by the INGENICO warranty conditions (when terminals are covered by an INGENICO warranty).
  • The use of inappropriate cleaning or disinfecting agents may create damages , functional problems or trigger a tamper alert. Such damages related to an inappropriate cleaning or disinfection are not covered by the INGENICO warranty (when terminals are covered by an INGENICO warranty).
  • Ingenico may issue regional specific cleaning bulletins which may be more restrictive on the use of allowed cleaning products than outlined in this document. This difference is attributed to merchant cleaning protocol differences that may vary by region.

Protectives films and PCI PTS compliance constraints :

Many companies propose some protective films and overlays to protect payment terminals from damages created by an intensive cleaning.
INGENICO reminds that PCI SSC does not endorse the use of overlays that interact with the entering of a payment card or PIN data, as stated on their website under the following link : https://blog.pcisecuritystandards.org/maintaining-pos-device-security-and-cleanliness

As recommended by PCI SSC, “Merchants should consult with their acquirer or payment brand on their position regarding the use of overlays during the current crisis.”

Some protective films and overlays may affect the good performances of the payment terminals.

In case of acquirer acceptance or card brand waiver, in order to get a better understanding of the offers proposed by some companies, here are the characteristics of a protective film that should be considered before buying these accessories:

•    To protect a keypad, don’t use an electrostatic film but a film with an adhesive
•    Polypropylene is a common and quite reliable material but prefer a film thinner than 0.9mm to avoid any wrong pin entry
•    A film cannot be used in a dusty atmosphere or in a bakery for instance
•    It is suggested to replace the film every 2 weeks
