Kiosk solution providers are facing more demand for outdoor self-service solutions that provide products or services anytime, anywhere and that optimize payment experiences for outdoor services, such as petrol, EV charging, and on-street parking. That requires outdoor payment terminals, designed for use in all weather conditions, including humidity and sunlight. Outdoor payment terminals must also be durable, able to withstand harsh conditions, and resistant to damage from vandals. They also need to be designed for integration with a kiosk system and compliant with the highest security standards and regulations. Ingenico offers both industry-leading devices and expertise to help kiosk solution providers deliver reliable, long-lasting solutions.

More and more, consumers want the convenience of self-service, whether inside or outside the four walls of a store. Grand View Research predicts the global self-service kiosk market will grow from $34.4 billion in 2024 to $62.5 billion by 2030, with the outdoor segment dominating the market at a 69.57% share in 2024. Proven in transportation, parking, and ticketing, the demand for outdoor payment terminals will increase, and the kiosk solution providers and system integrators who provide them will position their businesses for growth.

Essential Outdoor Payment Terminal Features

Outdoor payment terminals experience conditions that are rarely an issue inside a building, and attempting to use a payment terminal designed only for indoor use could likely cause your solution to fail. Designing terminals for outdoor use requires taking into account numerous constraints compared to terminals designed solely for indoor use.

Vandal-Proof

The primary quality of an outdoor terminal is its resistance to vandalism; terminals installed outdoors are more often exposed to vandalism attempts. Therefore, they must be impact-resistant, even though no equipment is indestructible for someone with the proper tools.

Impact resistance is characterized by the IK rating. IK09 is the minimum for outdoor use.

Weather-Proof

Another challenge outdoor payment terminals face is exposure to the elements, from rain, sleet, and snow to abrasive dust during high winds. Outdoor terminals must have high ingress protection (IP) ratings to ensure that water and dust don’t cause premature failure of the device.

Usually, an IP44 rating for a terminal with a hybrid contact reader and an IP65 rating for a contactless-only reader is a good target.

Sunlight-Readable

Deploying terminals outdoors requires ensuring any time readability of the terminal display/screen. The quality of the display is one consideration, but the dynamic level of luminosity according to external light is equally important.

Humidity-Proof

While related to weather, the threat from humidity is another important issue. Humidity can infiltrate the inner parts of the terminal, causing damage. Terminals must be designed to be as airtight as possible in order to keep all moisture away from critical components. Properly designed terminals with protection against humidity will last longer than devices without this feature. We recommend coating the entire internal board (tropicalization) and adding a water pipe to evacuate humidity from a hybrid contact reader.

UV-Resistant

Sunlight can cause damage to terminals. Standard plastic parts can discolor and become brittle. The best outdoor payment terminals use F1-certified outdoor plastic, certified for outdoor use under UL Solutions’ UL 746C standard.

Durable

The device should be constructed to withstand heavy public use. Outdoor payment terminals need to stand up to harsh cleaning chemicals that keep them hygienic. Choosing a terminal compliant with an existing form-factor standard (e.g., EVA) is a warranty to ensure the maintenance of the kiosk over the years. At Ingenico, we favor terminals that maintain the same format over several generations to facilitate kiosk upgrades.

Integrable and Connectable

Outdoor payment terminals are rarely standalone devices. They’re part of a kiosk or self-payment system that includes a screen, computing power, and a printer. The payment terminal must connect to the system to run transactions and get payment approvals. A 4G connectivity module is required if the kiosk doesn't have its own network connection. You also need to provide businesses with payment terminals they can monitor and manage remotely.

Compliant

The outdoor payment terminal you choose for your outdoor kiosk or payment solution must be Payment Card Industry PIN Transaction Security (PCI PTS) Unattended Payment Terminal (UPT) certified. However, depending on where you are deploying the kiosk, it may need to comply with additional regulations. All devices, including payment terminals, sold in the European Union must meet CE (Conformité Européenne) health, safety, and environmental protection standards. Devices with CE certification are tested in a certified laboratory to prove that they meet the requirements of related European directives, such as the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) for Wi-Fi, 4G, and near-field communication (NFC) devices, and the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. Indoor terminals are often certified as category 4 or 5; however, outdoor payment terminals need to meet requirements higher than 8 for top performance outside.

Security

The devices, especially the contact hybrid reader and physical PIN pad, must be tested for resistance to phishing and skimming attempts. External terminals must prevent, or make very difficult, the installation of a fake keyboard or fake reader bezel intended to intercept confidential information. In some countries (e.g., France with AFAS), terminals must meet requirements for specific certifications.

The following table shows how payment terminals designed for the harshest conditions outdoors compare to payment terminals designed only for indoor use:

Know Your Outdoor Terminal Options

Some newcomers in the payment technology industry offer what they call “outdoor payment terminals.” However, those devices aren’t designed, engineered, and manufactured based on experience with outdoor installs. Unfortunately, if you choose a device that isn’t designed for your application, you could find yourself with systems that fail and can’t accept payments.

A partner worth having has years of experience and offers outdoor payment terminals based on feedback and a commitment to continual product enhancements. The level of real-world experience a payment technology company has is evident in outdoor payment terminal design. Compared to our competitors, whose outdoor terminals last five or six years, Ingenico’s outdoor terminals last about 8 years, with some in service up to 10 years. Our expertise also shows when you need a partner to solve business problems and innovate.

The best partner for outdoor payment terminals offers industry-leading devices and expertise. At Ingenico, a terminal is designed for the harshest operating conditions, while also being suitable for indoor environments. Contact Ingenico for both.
